Why not buy a good strap? Most have a split ring mounted on a nylon
webbing strap so that metal only touches the lug on the inside of the
hole. They usually have swivel/quick release farther up the strap
away from the camera. The Domke, which is not expensive, is made
that way and even has leather pads to protect the camera from even
the nylon.
