50mm lens makes a nice loupe. You can make a clear plastic skirt or just
hand hold it. Cheap plastic and cardboard light boxes work fine for
checking through slides to see which ones merit a closer look.
You can always get better, more expensive stuff later, if you really get
into it.
If you are going to be scanning anyway, why not stick with negative
film? It has considerably better exposure latitude and at least as good
grain. Many of the issues of color balance, contrast, etc. become moot
when you scan.
