Also not easy to get to OH from IL without traversing IN. It's possible by
taking a detour through KY but that's the long, long way around IN. :))
Other difficult paths:
- leaping from from NY to NH without visiting VT
- jumping across NC to get to SC from VA.
Several recommendations:
CA: You may already be planning to see Yosemite. If you have time, wander
through Sequoia and Kings Canyon Nat'l Parks too (south of Yosemite).
WA: Mt. Rainier Nat'l Park.
WY: You didn't list this state. While wandering around sorting out how to
get from WA to MT without setting foot in ID, consider clipping the
northwest corner of WY on the way through and seeing both Yellowstone and
Grand Teton Nat'l Parks. It will let you add yet another state to the list
too. DON'T feed the bears there!

The tentative plan is to start in CA at father-in-law's place at Cobb,
then we'll be driving through OR, WA, MT, SD, IA, WI, IL, OH, PA, NY, NH,
MA, CT, NY again, PA, DC, VA, SC, GA, TN, AR, OK, Northern TX, NM, AZ and
back to CA
