For small objects you might look at some "polar fleece" in a fabric store. It's a man-made material (IIRC it's made from recycled plastic soda bottles). I've used it for "table top" backdrops and a cover for the pedestal(s) elevating the object(s). Has very, very low reflectance and near zero weave pattern; properties similar to the felt you've used.

The stuff used as canvas for "black art" is velour.

The word I was searching for as to the fabric I use is felt. The stuff that is used for black art escapes me. If I can find the name and phone # of the guy making the black art I will ask him. I havent seen him in a year or so. I once used the inside of a 20 x 24 sheet film box top to shoot some flowers. It worked pretty good.
