I understand your points, and am sad for your friend, but I had to challenge
this as a negative to digital.

This was just poor workmanship on your friends part.  I don't mean to be
rude, but you don't clean off the card, or have just one copy.   I copy them
to my primary machine. It has automatic backup software that copies them to
our house server.  I burn two copies, one of which I keep in the house and
one of which goes offsite.

This is no different then if he shot film, but didn't make prints and then
accidently destroyed the negatives.

You plan on the consequences of a virus -- nothing important should ever be
lost.
