So the "ancient civilizations" fringe are right? Ancient civilizations just
kept going to shorter- and shorter-lived products and "archival" materials
until the entire civilization vanished without a trace?

Indeed. Even black-and-white negative materials begin to deteriorate
after 25 years. It looks as if all you chaps that want permanance will
have to contract with painters to copy your slides onto canvas [grin].
