Assuming the built in meter is matched to the lens how would one know
the angle of coverage from an old sekonic hand held for example?
Would it not be wise to have a meter that covers the same angle as the lens?

Meter angles of that era almost never matched the lens. They were usually much wider and required that the photographer know enough to compensate.
