Going to a field trip w/ the kids to Point Reyes. Whale watching suppose to be good, although we will be on land, not out there in the sea...

So what size lens do I need? 1000mm? I guess a 4x converter on the 200/4 will do it eh :-)?

A whale is pretty big. Wide angle?

Joking aside, unless you have one of those clever and expensive gyroscopic stabilizers to counteract the roll of the the ship I would suggest something you can handhold easily and point at a moving target while your feet and body are moving in another direction. A finer grain film that you can take a section out of may not be a bad idea.
