Maybe something's physically wrong, like the alignment of the flash tube 
with the reflector, or the light lens?

Is everything at the same distance? Closer stuff gets more light.

Are you using a very wide angle lens?

Some immediate solutions:
        - bounce off the wall or ceiling (the light, I mean.) 
        - use a slight telephoto like an 85 or 100 and back up. This reduces 
the 
disparity between subject & background.
        - open up your lens aperture so the shutter speed indicates 1/30 or 
1/15. 
The flash will set the shutter at 1/60, so the ambient light will fill in 
the background 1 or 2 stops down.
