It's all about stability, damping vibrations. A "cheap plastic" tripod (mine
is a cheap aluminum tripod -- probably worse) just doesn't provide a stable,
vibration-damping platform.
"Shake" is a combination of wind-induced movements and harmonic vibrations
(from the mirror and shutter movements) carried down thru the camera body to
the tripod mount. The heavier and more rigid the tripod, the less this
induced "shake" will affect it. Different materials also "damp" vibrations
at different rates. I suppose the carbon fiber tripods are the best at this,
but haven't seen any data. Wood is also pretty good at absorbing & damping
vibrations. I may just end up toting a wood tripod, given that I'm a
dedicated dinosaur to begin with, if I find one I like better than a
Bogen/Manfrotto 3021 Pro.
