[OM] OM2+flash

I have some questions concerning flash photography with my OM-2.

1. The OM manual recommends using the camera on MANUAL, when taking pictures
with a normal auto flash (I have no Olympus flash). What about using it on
AUTO? I suppose I would get a flash in the foreground, AND a dark background
would also be correctly exposed. Am I right?
Of course, I have to use a tripod in this case.
Is it the same as using it on MANUAL, with a long shutter speed (i.e. 1
sec)?

2. I recently took some pictures with a Metz 32-MZ-3 flash for the first
time. Although the flash did fire indeed, there is no flash recorded on the
pictures!! Now, my guess would be that somehow the flash fired before the
camera even had the chance of taking the picture (talking fractions of
seconds here). It's the only way I can explain it.
Did any of you encountered this kind of problem before?
I didn't have problems with other flashes, just this one.
Is this flash too quick for my OM-2?

Thanks
        cris
