Additional thoughts:
Most lenses do have greater acuity when stopped down by one to three stops. Some of the advantage is the extension of the range of "sweet spot" apertures in a well-designed very fast lens compared to a simpler, slower lens. The absolute aperture must be wider to detect degradation. In general usage apertures between f/2 and f/1.2 are not used nearly as much; the DoF can easily be too narrow. In exceptionally low lighting levels, usage of those lens speeds is made knowing the tradeoff with both DoF and with general acuity.
