You are right, George.
There are many ways in which a teleconverter can be designed, and in
this case the design has been optimized for the lenses indicated on
the converter.
I do not know if the optical design of the prime lenses have been
taken into account, or that the 'matching' applies to a certain range
of focal lengths only. I think the first, since e.g. the 1.4xA is
recommended for use with the 180/2 and not with the 180/2.8...
But, as you already said, the converters may do good jobs with other
lenses than the recommended ones as well.
