That is where I would disagree. Would you expose the same for a very black
face as you would for a Noh actor in whiteface?

It depends on where you want detail. If it's everywhere, incident will
replicate the visual conditions as much as possible. But for particular
subjects, you may wish to make sure you capture the detail in the bright or
dark portions.

That is exactly where an incident reading is valuable so white looks white and black looks black. Of course, at extremes you have to keep the latitude of the film and the effect you are striving for in mind. You certainly do not want the white face and the black face to both appear the same shade of gray.
