I also forgot to mention that after I got the 'advice' from the post
office guy, I went to a couple of banks and asked if they sold
international money orders. The look I got from the bank tellers was
like a cross between I just handed her a hold -up note, or I had
forgotten to wear pants. (Their answer of course, was "no they don't").
They couldn't believe I would ask such a dumb question. We definitely
need a better system.
I've done international money orders, wire transfers, and
other international payments through my local bank without
trouble, but the fees are steep. If I remember right, the
fees added more than 10% to a transfer od 400 or so guilders
to a seller in the Netherlands. PayPal is much cheaper than
that, and faster, too.
