Now you're thinking correctly. I just shot to family portraits, with the
E10. They will choose what they want and it will go straight to the lab...no
proofs to deal with. Keep thinking...digital will make some of your life a
lot easier. Be sure to get a CD burner cause you'll need it. Imagine
that...CDs instead of film and negative storage. For some things it will
work wonderfully. I am not ready to throw away the OM, Leicas, or blads just
yet.

As a matter of fact, I've seen E10s refurbished by Olympus for as little as
$800. I'm meeting with the client next Wed to look over the products and
give them an estimate. Doing it digitally is mighty tempting! I think 4
megapixels would be more than adequate for this job and for a lot of future
jobs as well! This client indicated they would have new products to shoot
every 3 or 4 months.

I have an E10. I am not impressed enough with the E20 to pony up more money.
The E10 suits me very well...and it paid for itself within 2 months doing
portraits, etc. Except for weddings and a few other ocasions, I use it for
just about everything. My lab can take the four meg file and turn it into a
20x30 and I can send it to them in an e-mail. I also use the P400 printer.
It is wonderful...I wish they would dream up a new, non-glossy paper. Oh
well, It is one heck of a combination.
If you want to save some money, see if you can pick up an E10 instead of the
E20. Others may have a different opinion of the two
Please feel free to ask questionsl

Roger, I've been checking these out - do you use one? Do you use the
minidrive with it?

Quote it with sufficient leaway to afford yourself the E20 that you will use
to do the job.

Is there digital in my future?!! Boy, I would like to avoid all that
scanning time. I already have the lights and backdrop, so that saves some
rental costs. I'm going to look over the products next Wednesday before I
give them an estimate!

Thanks for your advice!!

Jim,

My general rule is $500-1000 per day depending on multitudes of
factors, plus all costs times two. Reproduction ownership is
negotiable, but for catalog work isn't worth the hassle.

White seemless backdrop, rented studio lights (you'll pass on
all rental costs) will give you an easy to "blast" background
that will be shadowless and scannable without having to spend
much photoshop time with.

I'm kinda leaning towards the digital camera route, myself, too.
A rented/borrowed/bought E20 would be ideal for this. Instant
results, direct dump into computer. Save the company lots of
money and time.

Figure on four pictures per hour in figuring the time needed.
This is provided that these will be straight shots with just a
swap and shoot style of working. Anything fancy will require
thirty minutes to an hour each.

The shoot will take three full days. Don't even think on
skimping there. Per shot time might be less, but setup and
teardown and breaks will need to fall in there too.

Another reason why digital would be a better choice here (and
the job would instantly pay for the E20) is that when you walk
away from the shoot you may be completely done. With film, you
will have scanning and photoshop time which will take another
six days to accomplish. Unfortunately you can't easily charge
what your time is worth there. "Hidden" costs like that don't
fly very well these days.

Gosh, did I actually suggest a digital camera TWICE?

AG-the world is ending-Schnozz
