The serial number is fairly early. There is a wide variety of origin markings
through the years. "Lens made in Japan" on the front ring is an early one, as
is "Japan" on the front ring. Late lenses have "made in Japan" on the front
ring,
and the MIJ (should it be miJ?) that people talk about is one of those. My miJ
also has "JAPAN" on the mount. There was also a "LENS MADE IN JAPAN" on the
mount period.
