John who knows all has slipped a bit. -30C equals -22F. The finer pitch of F doesn't catch up with the difference in zero points until -40 degrees where C=F.

I don't know all, but knew that was not right, so I looked it up.

I dont know how to convert to F but here is what I found by placing
a winder, and the oil and grease in the freezer ( -30 degrees C)

Using the winder straight out of the freezer is miles ahead better
than it was before a cleaned and lubbed it :-)

[observations about the grease snipped out]

-30C is -86F. This more than answered my question. Neither man nor beast should be out in that cold. If it survived that, it should work on a Himalyan trek in winter. Maybe not the batteries, but at least the winder would if power is wired to it.

You really have a freezer that cold?
I'm surprised your hand didn't stick to the winder :-)
