I've been doing pretty much as you suggest for a while, although I used an
OM2s/p and hence didn't need the autoconnector.

It works relatively well, except that (how are they called?) "guide
light" from the flashes would be nice to be able to preview shadows
etc. But with experience it works.

I've found that I didn't really need a flash-meter (I've got one, which is
indispensable when shooting MF - no TTL there), but I do use the exposure
compensation dial.

Also, you may find that (for some portraits) you wish to bounce your
flashes off of "something"....

But otherwise, just go ahead and have fun ;)
