All this talk of spring seems premature. It was 17 below zero here two days
ago and is supposed to snow tonight. Springtime in the Rockies...ha! /jim

Subject: [OM] Saturday Outing

Well,

We loaded the Jeep with the girls and went for a little
adventure this afternoon. There is a decent sized man-made lake
about 20 miles south of us. A couple of years ago I discovered
jeep trails down in the flood plain. So off we went. The Jeep
had been hangered for a couple of weeks so it was good getting
it out of the garage.

On the last hill above the water there was an old abandoned farm
house. Stop, get out, and take some photos. I'm standing by
the jeep, OM-2S, 50/3.5 mounted on monopod taking a picture when
"Farmer Billy Bob" pulls up to investigate what I'm doing. "No
huttin on my land, boy!" I explain that I'm a freelance
photographer and I'm only taking pictures. "Where youse work?
You live in Newton?" He's reading my license plate that
indicates which county the vehicle is registered in. I explain
that my day job is working for the phone company. "Dat house
u'to be over on the utter hill" pointing to a lump about a half
mile away. Seeing the condition of the house and the
surrounding trees, I'd say that it was probably moved no less
than 75 years ago. Even the wood shingles were shot. I ask if
it was on his land? "Yup. I own a couple of miles of land
here. Go ahead and pass through that field access there and you
can get a better shot." I thank him and watch him pull slowly
away and spit a huge wad out his window. Being careful where to
step, I mosey back to the jeep to grab my camera bag and tell
Karen and the girls that I'll be a couple of minutes.

I finish off a half a roll of Fuji 100 print film shooting
mostly with the polorizer or polorizer/red filter combination
for B&W printing. Because of the lay of the land, I had to
change to the 35/2.8. Shot a few more then reloaded with some
HP5. Went back and got a couple critical shots. Cool stuff,
I'm looking forward to printing them. Sky was perfectly blue,
almost wish that there were a couple of clouds to give some
drama, but I think it will work out just fine.

Almost ready to wrap it up and I'm standing about 100 meters
inside this field when I here the rattle of the diesel powered
pickup truck moseying back up the road. Billy Bob slows to a
crawl, eyeballs my wife and kids in the jeep and gives me an odd
look. Ok, I'm finished now. I give him a nod and he cruises
on. Farmer Billy Bob, who owns a few miles of prime Iowa
farmland is probably worth more than a few million dollars.

For the next hour or so we drove around down in the floodplain
and through some woods, up and down slopes, around deadwood,
etc. Stopped and got lots of pictures.

It was a mighty fine day. Winter is almost over. Maybe a sneak
snowstorm or two, but you could almost smell the blossems.

We definitely had to wash the jeep in Knoxville. The color of
the jeep was only partially recognizable after crossing a couple
of muddy sections.

Tom, a certain 35/2.8 got a HUGE workout.

AG-of course it was a silvernose-Schnozz
