Just tried taking off the memo frame on an old broken back -- it is quite firmly
spot-welded in place.  If you want to try it, I'd first slide out the plate in 
the
middle of the memo frame (press down and push out like you would a film box 
end) and
remove the old leatherette.  Then use a cutting wheel on a Dremel-type tool held
perpendicular to the back to slowly cut into the corners.  You can "mill" off 
the frame,
leaving the spot-welded tabs in place, then fill with some epoxy to smooth.
