Some tips:

With the OM's, this works at 1/125th and faster (won't work at X-sync and slower). With horizontal travel shutters, hold the camera horizontally. With vertical travel shutters, hold the camera vertically. If lens is on, open to widest aperture or remove it from the body. If the back is completely removeable, it can be less awkward to hold if it's removed entirely.

The width of the diagonal bar should narrow to about half it's previous width as you increase the shutter speed to the next stop. If you don't see the diagonal bar the first time, fire a few more times. The exact location of the bar will move around.

Also works with computer screens.

Doesn't work with leaf shutters.

Look through the shutter (held about 12" from your face) at a light tv
screen as you fire the shutter, you should see a diagonal bar about 1/8"
wide. That atleast tells you that the shutter is opening and it is a high
speed.
