Rather than a 300mm prime I would toss out that for someone just
starting out that a decent quality zoom that reaches to say 250 or 300mm
maybe a better option and way to spend the $$$.

My suggestion would be a Tamron SP 60-300. I used one for a little over
10 years and had some very nice results from it. Building up an OM
system is all well and good, but investing in an assortment of Zuiko
primes is not for the faint of wallet. The added bonus with a lens like
the SP 60-300 is it has a nice range and good macro capabilities too.
For someone just starting out this is a wiser way to spend lens money
IMO.

I wouldn't hesitate hand-holding a 300mm either. I have for years and
know many who do with large and heavy 300mm f2.8s.

HTH, and welcome to the list Kierstin (and all the rest of the newcomers
we had a nice number of joining us here in the past week or two).
