Here's the final(?) report on the IS-1 with problems. I heard from the
seller Tuesday. He turned out to have sold it for someone else. That
person told him that the batteries in the camera were 2 1/2 years old. On
Tuesday I picked up some Varta 123A batteries and loaded them. The camera
still didn't work, so I figured that was that. Later in the day I happened
to open the back. Upon closing, it made all of the appropriate noises.
Turning the camera on still gave the whirring noise before the camera turned
itself off. Well, after doing the same procedure 2 or 3 more times, the
camera began to work normally again. I could zoom, focus, use the flash,
etc. I loaded a roll of film and fired off a dozen or so shots Tuesday
evening (flash) and Wednesday morning. I took the film in to be developed
Wednesday and got it back today. The pictures are all fine and the camera
is still working. I don't know what problems were caused when (apparently)
the batteries died while I was playing with the camera Monday night. I'm
certainly not sure those (or other) problems won't crop up. It's working
now, so I've decided to keep it. I really like the size of the IS-1
compared to my IS-3. I'm not sure I would trust this IS-1 enough to take it
on an important trip as my sole camera, but for another Olympus toy to play
with it will do the trick. Thanks for the on & off list reponses.
