The first hurdle to clear with canned rock 'n roll is the absence (clipping) of the dynamic range of the live performance. This will be more noticeable from a performance of a hard-driving band like Crazy Horse fronted by Neil Young, where the party truly gets out of control, then, say, a more measured concert by a group like The Moody Blues or Yes, where the event is closely orchestrated from start to finish. The live album you mention is pretty good, but it doesn't (couldn't) come close to doing that Rust Never Sleeps tour justice.

I never saw Jethro Tull perform live. Some friends saw them, though, on a night when they debuted their Aqualung material. I don't know but I would guess that that album, for all its in-your-face excellence, never quite satisfied them the as it did me.

Okay, I'll play. I just posted a rant complaining about recordings of rock
concerts but the majesty, the complexity, the awesome power and truth of
Neil Young and Crazy Horse is way, way better live than it is on "Live
Rust". I love that album but on a high end stereo it doesn't begin to
approximate the sound at the concert even though every bit of sound comes
through the house pa. They must have a great pa. Maybe they own it.
