Vivitar 285HV or 283.

Inexpensive (even new). Powerful enough to light up a larger room (GN ~120; ISO 100, feet), reliable, auto sensor works well, and the power level control on the 285HV allows many f-stops for a given film speed. All reasons why photojournalists have been using the 285 for many years. Even if it's an "old" high trigger voltage it won't hurt the K1000. The better buy is the 285HV. By the time one adds the variable power [??] module to the 283, it's up to the price of a 285.

Does anyone have a good (and cheap) 3rd party flash that I could

that would just be too biased. ;)

p.s.
they are using a K1000 and 50mm combination.
