Well in sunny and partly cloudy weather a slower zoom
is fine. Get anywhere where there isn't good lighting
though and you'll have to use a tripod or strong flash
or high speed film or a combination of the three. Also
be prepared to have pretty severe barrel distortion at
the wide end and pincusion at the long end. Zoom
lenses that are 3.5-4.5 are fine as a replacement for
the occasions you are looking for. Test slower zooms
though since they are usually of much cheaper build
and optical quality and might have to be stopped down
to get acceptable results.
