There's a (not very active) fault line that runs down the Hudson Valley right 
to NYC. Here in northern NJ, I can recall 2 or 3 small quakes that made the 
news in the past 15 or so years. Some people notice them, some don't. 
Usually, things kept on shelves get rattled and sometimes knocked down.
