You said your slides were dark slides except in bright sun. Here are some
thoughts on using the camera for snapshots if you don't have a spare body.
>From what you said, the meter's right in bright light, so I'd use an
un-adjusted exposure in that setting.

Your post said that under lower light, however, you had underexposure.
Here's a quick fix to get you through with an underexposing meter for
non-critical snapshots. Switch to color negative film and set the film
speed lower by 1 +2/3 stops. This is 5 clicks on the film speed dial since
each click is 1/3 stop.

If you're using ASA 160 film, set the meter to EI 50. If you're loaded with
ASA 400, set the meter to EI 125.

You'll be compensating for the out-of-spec meter (or the wrong battery) and
you'll be closer to the right exposure. If the meter miraculously starts
behaving, you'll have an overexposure but color negative film is capable of
producing good results even with 2 stops of overexposure according to
Popular Photography magazine. (Okay for snapshots- not for the critically
excellent results that John Lind gets!) Just remember to reset the dial
when you're in bright sun.

Even though you got the battery converted, it's still possible to use the
"wrong" battery. The package should say "silver oxide" not "alkaline". If
the foam wasn't replaced when the battery was converted, you are risking
damage to the finder brightness. I've read that the silvering on the
pentaprism gets corroded by runny foam.
