I know this hardly fits in with your itinerary, but I can't recommend
strongly enough the 'other extreme' of Honshu. The rural, much more
agrarian atmosphere up North is a wonderful contrast to the hustle and
bustle of megalopolis Tokyo. There's an absolutely stunning crater lake at
the far north of the island (Lake Towada) that's overflowing with photo ops.
Hachinoe, Aomori, are lovely cities. There's another great spot a little
further down the East coast... Ryusendo caves. Very picturesque stuff. My
spelling is probably in the tank on some of those places, but like I said,
IMHO it's worth the trip to visit these remote, off the beaten path spots.
And you'll be a little late, or I'd recommend Hirosaki castle, as well...
famous for cherry blossoms in the spring.

Jim, greening by the minute with envy.
