As I understand it, the soapy feeling arises because when an alkali and
a fat are brought together, soap is actually produced - the reaction is
known as saponification.  I was fascinated by that and spent some time
converting my subcutaneous finger fat into soap.  Definitely
ill-advised, but how does one learn except from one's mistakes?

The other thing I learned in chemistry is that sniffing ether for a
couple of hours yields hilarious results, but should probably not be
done more than once - ether, being an organic solvent, dissolves the
brain... oops...
