I used to skip using stop bath in the old days when I was doing a huge amount
of developing and
had a relatively inexhaustible supply of fresh Kodak Rapid Fixer.

When I had to make the Fix myself I usually recycled it and found that I could
recycle one
liter of Fix up to six times as long as I used Stop Bath. Since Kodak
Indicator Stop Bath was
much less expensive than Fixer and prepared by simply diluting a the
concentrate, I would usually use it. An additional benefit of using
Stop Bath (dilute acetic acid plus indicator)was
that it really "stopped" the developing reaction to the point that the film
could actually be safely inspected (try it sometime)before it was
cleared by the Fixer.
