Welcome Keith... Well, you have raised a serious question -- "What does
'need' have to do with it?"

But seriously-- I think you can find the 300/4.5 for less than 250GBP (I
make that to be ~$400), perhaps on our infamous auction site. I believe the
trend on the prices of that lens has been lower compared with a year or so
ago... and it is a *very* good lens, much better IMO than a 135 and 2x, and
probably better than a 135 and Oly 2X-A converter as well.

I would recommend for its best use a monopod or tripod; while it is possible
to hand-hold a 300/4.5 if necessary (as in panning motorcycle pictures) it
is a lot of lens to swing about, and will require high shutter speeds for
sharpness (1/500 or 1/1000 are the only viable options with the OM-2). Note
that with regard the light level, the 300/4.5 is about 2/3 stop faster than
a 135/2.8 with a 2x converter as well.

Bottom line is that you need both the 300/4.5 and the 2X-A, as they can be
used together... but first get the 300/4.5, it is a sweet lens.
