Car trunks don't necessarily work either. Some Yosemite bears open them. Since they don't use keys, it makes quite a mess.

Also, 8 feet isn't enough there, minimum 10, more is better. Some friends lost their food bag to a mother and cub team. The mom sent the cub up the tree to climb out the branch supporting the food. I don't remember now if the cub knocked/gnawed the bag loose or bent the branch down to where mom could reach it, but the bears got the food.

Keep anything food related up in a tree, suspended from a branch, at 8 feet or so off the ground, away from your tent/campsite, and you'll be fine when camping. Food inside cars, RVs, etc. in Yellowstone or other major parks isn't exactly safe. I've seen film of bears breaking car windows and ripping off car doors to get at it. I think they know the difference between a Coleman and a Thermos cooler. They can rip the bark right off a tree, turn over logs, just to get at honey, ants. Amazing strength.
