Sorry Andrea, I have to disagree with you, at least partly.

Garmisch is a fine southern German town in the Alps, but there are
many other towns which are worth visiting. Garmisch has a BX and
therefore is nearly a little bit of the USA. If I were asked where
to visit in that part of Germany, I should go to one of the other
towns along the border - Oberammergau or Sondhofen perhaps - I have
been to many places there when I used to ski. On the other hand, I
should prefer to recommend somewhere up the Romantischestrasse in
Bavaria, where the beer/bier is much better. Try Schlenkerla (sp?)
Rauchbier for a start, it is difficult to find anywhere else in the
world. Yet again, try crossing the old inter-German border into the
Thueringer Wald where it is still relatively unspoilt.

I would have to second this suggestion. Although not as cheap as it was in
the mid-90's, it has beautiful architecture and interesting culture. And by
western European standards, is still cheap.

Other not so cheap but interesting places: my favorite little ski town,
Garmisch-Partenkirchen. A good place to get the ubiquitous Bavarian shots,
and the food/bier is just great.
 My $.02 -
