I reckon the thinking photographer just shoots flash in manual mode by the GN. It's amazing how little the promise of ease and accuracy is borne out with TTL.

My workaround with TTL is -2/3 on the exp comp dial. This usually gets faces right on slide film if they are not right up against a wall. I don't worry about it on negative film.

This is not a big problem for the thinking photographer. Just use -1 to -1.5 exposure compensation with dark/far backgrounds and +0.5 with light backgrounds. For cameras without direct exposure compensation dials like the OM-1 and the XA, change the film speed. One does have to remember to change it back!

(TTL usually blows out facial tones with straight-on flash unless the subject is up against a white wall, then it's apt to go the other way.)
