Both of the above lens hoods are of the clamp-on variety. And not
to be argumentative, it does matter, only indirectly. The hood does
indeed clamp on to the outside of the lens, but the outside diameter
is the same as the inside diameter plus the thickness of the metal (well,
actually the outside diameter will be the inside diameter plus *twice*
the metal thickness, but you already knew that). The clamp will only
adjust within a narrow tolerance, not larger, and only a little smaller.

Pete

You have filter ring diameters confused (??):
  49mm: 50/1.8, 50/1.4 and 50/1.2
  55mm: 55/1.2

The 55/1.2 has its own unique hood. Both the 50/1.4 and 55/1.2 had been discontinued when the 50/1.2 was introduced, but the 50/1.8 and 35/2.8 were still in production. My SWAG: a new hood was created for the 50/1.2 as the 50/1.8, 50/1.4, 35/2.8 hood would not reverse over its barrel.
