With all of this Zuiko 200/F5.0 talk, I dug out a 1979 Modern Photography
article on telephoto lenses. The Zuiko 200/F5.0 was one of the lenses
discussed. I quote,"To get this more compact lens, Olympus Engineers
increased the number of elements in the front group to four and added a
relatively wide space between the third and fourth elements. This lens
layout, combined with the section of higher index of refraction glasses for
several of the elements, makes the overall length of the 200 mm much shorter,
while image quality is as high as before." Modern also commented that the
increase from the usual 4 elements to the Zuiko's five elements was to help
eliminate the increase in zonal aberrations that sometimes accompany shorter
telephotos.
