Aside from costing a lot more?

A ball head can be a wonderful thing (for the price of a good one it should
be), and is more flexible than a pan-tilt head, but they do have downsides,
as well.

If you're not careful, it can tip over easily. You can get youself crossed
up, and it's like having your camera on a piece of wet spaghetti. It's not
as easy to get an exact position as with a gear head.

No head is perfect, but for situations where positioning is critical,
archetectural, for example, it bogen 410 is much better than a ball head.
You can tweek things critically, with just the turn of a knob. \
