A lot can depend on the cost of shipping (and insurance), relative to the
original cost of the item. Using a service like UPS can greatly increase
costs. In Denmark, the calculation goes (as far as I remember):
Original cost a + all shipping costs b, total = a + b
Import duty at 4% , total = 1.04 (a +b)
Sales tax at 25% total = 1.25 * 1.04 (a+b)
Post Office customs agent charge = $6

Grand Total = $6 + 1.3 (a+b).

This is dependent on shipping by USPS. Obviously for small items, where 'b'
is disproportionately large relative to 'a' (such as shipping one MR-9
battery dims), one should look for a european vendor if that is possible.

Thomas asked: Is this really typical to see that much taxes?

The worst I even experienced was made up of several components and
dramatically increased the total. There was:
   import duty
customs agent charges (the post office may act as import agent)
   value-added tax
   shipping and insurance
value added tax on the customs agent charges
value added tax on the shipping and insurance
and to make it worse, I wasn't home when they tried to deliver it and I had
to drive 50km to the airport to receive it (during working hours only...)

Enjoy the contents!
