does
*immediately* turn off the viewfinder display (if active), the viewfinder
illuminator (if on). More important, it prevents them from being activated

by partially pressing the shutter release or the viewfinder illuminator
button.

Although disabling both when it's not in use is a Good Thing, most
important is the disabling of the viewfinder illuminator. Depending on how

it's stored in a camera bag, this button can be depressed by other objects
in the bag, including a divider. Continuous activation of the viewfinder
illuminator in particular will drain the camera batteries very, very
quickly.

Been there, done that, and now rotate the shutter speed ring to the red
1/60th when puting the camera back into the bag.

Yeah, but I've been using OM-4s more than 20 years -- got six of 'em -- and
I've never had it happen. Maybe I'm just more careful. :-)
