Actually, I find them very convenient. I often hike with five or more 
of them in my Lowepro backpack. They're not any lighter than 
normal filters, because what they lose in metal they make up for in 
the very serious durable plastic boxes that come with them - but I 
find them to be very versatile and easy to use. There are two series -
 A and P - A for 35mm (7 cm. square - nearly 3 inches), P for 2 
1/4. You can also use the P series on 35mm without any problem - 
so that might be a good alternative for multiformat people.
