I would rather deal with a rangefinder than AF.

Is there any good way to focus with a rangefinder (XA) in low light? I have
enough trouble seeing the double image at the best of times, but when things
get dim I have no chance. Should I just estimate range by hand and set it
manually, or is there some trick I'm missing?

(I'd guess low light is where passive AF starts to become very unhappy,
right?)

I think it depends on the quality of the rangefinder. You can almost
always find a brighter edge or highlight close enough to your center
of focus to make it work. Even if not exactly right it will be
consistently more accurate than the vagueness of SLR focus with a
wide angle.

Some cameras that use passive autofocus have an alternative for low
light consisting of an infrared pattern that is projected onto the
subject and read by the AF system. It is good up to about 10 feet
for accurate close focus which is more critical than far away.
