I did a little browsing on the KEH and B&H Photo web sites, and I came up with a viable kit for your $1,000. The only thing missing is a case. The way I did it was by assuming that KEH's "Bargain" rating is as good across the board as it was for the lens I bought from them, and as many other members of the list have testified. Here's the kit:

(All used, KEH "Bgn" condition)
Nikon FM2n Black body.....$286
Nikon 50mm f/1.4 AI..........$109
Nikon 24mm f/2.8 NC AI....$126
Nikon 200mm f/4.0 AI.........$105
Nikon TC 200 AI..................$76 (teleconverter for Nikon lenses under 200mm)
Nikon SB 16A.....................$139 (flash unit)
Subtotal................................$841

(Used, B&H Photo "7" condition)
MD 12 Motor Drive.............$129

Total....................................$970

This would give your young person just starting a very flexible set up that covers a wide range of situations and is expandable.

Hi Zuiks:

A list member (John Lind?) once remarked that if we were rational people
we would all own a N*k*n and three lenses.

I am writing my "take-home" final for the photography class that I'm
taking at the University of Idaho. One question is to advise a young
person who currently owns no equipment, but is interested in gradually
acquiring a quality system over time. They have a current budget of
about $1,000, but it is also likely that they will receive additional
gear over time from friends and relatives for graduation, Christmas,
birthdays, etc.

Regretfully, I don't see how I could recommend Olympus, in this
scenario. So far, I have come up with a N*k*n FM (or FM2 or FM2n), the
50 mm f/1.8, and the 105 mm f/2.5.

Questions:
1. What would the "third lens" be?
2. How would you answer this question?

BTW, the instructor is a long-time N*k*n user.

Thanks!
