I won't belabor the point beyond this (and only because you state it is
"ridiculous" - it's not); London (esp SE London) has the highest crime rate
in the UK - day or night. I could repeat what I said and insert "12 noon".
Media hype aside, certain crime there has rocketed (Home Office figures)
there to what it was even 10 years ago.
I don't take such things out of context - and the advice I gave is sound. I
would give the same to anyone travelling in any major city these days
anywhere iin the world. And I did mention it, only because many people -
especially here in the USA - seem to be under the illusion that Britain is a
place where they can drop their guard. Not so. And it shouldn't spoil
anyone's trip knowing this.

Well.........
It seems unlikely that any foreign visitor would wish to visit these areas
anyway, particularly at this ungodly hour. Despite the media hype, the UK is
relatively crime free as far as tourists go. There will always be areas that
have more crime than others, but to label these areas as 'crime capitals' is
ridiculous.
Just take sensible precautions and you will be OK.
