It could be oil. The coating is very fine and even, but does oil usually
etch the surface of the glass (is this element actually glass)?
In the sample I had 'repaired', the element was not transparent even
immediately after cleaning, and they knew I would be looking....
Some of the examples I have looked at have had only a very slight problem,
but in every one, if you hold the lens up to a point source, there is a
translucent diffusion of light.
Does anybody have a lens with this problem, and is it visible on the
photographs?
