I spent 35 years working for a national laboratory whose role was partially
to do research and development in the nuclear power area. This was work that
was expensive and required extensive real estate to perform. The role of the
lab was to demonstrate feasibility and proof of principal before turning the
technology over to the private sector. We were partially funded by, and
shared the technology with, Germany, Japan, Great Britain and others. Some
research and development is beyond the ability of individuals.

On the other hand, the primary component of television was invented by a
young farm boy from Eastern Idaho. His idea was stolen by the RCA
Corporation with absolutely no compensation to him. His family finally
prevailed in court long after his death.

Good ideas come from both individuals and groups of people.

I think you're overlooking significant advances in drugs and medical
research.
