I don't have any information here with me but will get some references, or a
written summary, if someone would like more information. As I recall the
idea came to him while he was riding on a tractor. The device was the first
that transmitted an image as a series of lines. Farnsworth died broke and an
alcoholic. He was most distraught over the programming material on
television, which he had visualized as an educational device. Now there is a
lot of excellent educational programming along with plenty of junk. /jim

Hi All
He came up with the concept of electron beam scanning for the sampling and
reproduction of images.  He built the first working device to do so in 1923,
I think.

There's a monument locating his old workshop on Battery St. in San
Francisco.  Unless they put a Starbucks there, like the rest of the City.
