Drugs and medical research? Research into the HIV virus for instance has largely been privately funded. This is not to say government work has not been beneficial. But it should be kept in mind when associating government with a field of research like the medical field - especially in some special areas - that governments always hold their own interests first - all others second and on down.

If a government came up with a single treatment (as in cure and/or sure protection for those not infected) of most known viruses and many of the most dangerous bacteria - would they allow it onto the open market? Or would it immediately be classified as "a matter of national security" since it would might render many biological weapons useless? Bear in mind that "biological" weapons - bacteria - have more uses today than just attacking the human body. Many have been under developement to attack materials and vital resources like fuels.

I am not making light of or denying that government R&D has been benefical - there has been many things that have been of benefit. But it must be kept in it's historical - practical - and political perspective.

Cheers,
Lee

I think you're overlooking significant advances in drugs and medical
research.
