The lens should be brushed off thoroughly to remove "grit" first!!

If there is stuff still stuck to it, some lens cleaning fluid and applying it to the tissue or cloth, *not* the lens, should be used *gently* to remove it. Pouring lens cleaning fluid directly onto a lens element is a good method to get cleaning fluid inside the lens where it can dry and leave some very nice spots that cannot be removed without lens disassembly. Dry microfiber cloths are suitable for removing things such as fingerprints, not dirt. Most "cleaning marks" are from people using things such as their dry shirt tails and scrubbing lenses clean with them.

Me?  I skip all the fussy stuff and go straight to the Brillo pad method.
